Caminante, no hay camino,
se hace camino al andar.
Walker, there is no path. The path is made by walking.
— Antonio Machado, Proverbios y cantares XXIX
Most of what blocks shared understanding sits just below what's being said.
Unfortunately, sharing is the problem.
The shape of a life takes place by walking a step at a time. The shape of shared life takes form by speaking, hearing, naming, picturing. What we make together is not separate from us individually. It is the ground we walk on together, next.
We are named "Curious" because curiosity is the way of attending to what we have already made together. The effort to see the shape we are walking. Each act we make is an instance set down in a social field. Writing, picturing, sharing, commenting, curiosity create the path.
"Curious Company" is a social practice studio. Our sister nonprofit is Curious Quarterly. We build the instruments communities use to see the shape of their own communication: Habitat, Legible, Visible.
All noncynical discursive practice assumes democracy—an equitable distribution of accessible and effective meaning for sustainable life. Below this threshold of what's said and understood, a culture faces developmental absence, erosion, or erasure.
We work with civic, scientific and community organizations to help them see across documents what is said, unsaid and implied. We convene people to observe discourse and deliberation, so the shape of democracy in communication can be seen and reviewed.
*Habitat, our own software, is compositional intelligence that reads discourse topology across seventeen axes to reveal accessibility distribution in a community's own language.
Curious Quarterly, our sister media and education nonprofit, publishes work that emerges from these sessions.
